Pashinyan questions silence of catholicos Karekin II

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan wrote on his Facebook page that the public is waiting for Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II to clarify allegations regarding a breach of his vow of celibacy and reports that he has a child.

“What does Karekin II’s silence mean? We, his flock, await a public explanation regarding the violation of his vow of celibacy and having a child,” wrote Pashinyan.

“To stay silent is to agree and remove oneself from the Mother See. Telling the truth also means removal. Lying does the same,” he added.

Pashinyan's post follows criticism from clerics after he likened churches to storage rooms during a government session. In response, he made a series of Facebook posts targeting the clergy, joined by his wife Anna Hakobyan with controversial remarks such as “keep banging your uncle’s wife” and labeling clergy “the country’s top pedophiles.”

Pashinyan has stated that the state should play a central role in the election of the Catholicos. In another post, he questioned Karekin II’s eligibility, suggesting that if the celibacy breach is proven, he would not qualify as a celibate priest, let alone Catholicos.

The Mother See responded by condemning the accusations, stating such actions serve the interests of external anti-Armenian forces and mirror slanderous narratives promoted by Azerbaijani propaganda.
