Member of Parliament Tigran Abrahamyan wrote in a Facebook post that “a person who has completely failed the responsibilities outlined in the Constitution, government program, and election pledges—having done no serious reforms or failed to complete them—now dares to speak about Church order and reform.”
He emphasized that “preventing attacks on the Mother See requires action on two levels.”
He wrote: “The same language is echoed from Baku. In recent weeks, the Azerbaijani spiritual leader's voice has been significantly amplified and his rhetoric intensified.
Preventing attacks on the Mother See requires a two-pronged approach.
Politically, it means a change in government. At present, the only relevant political agenda is the vote of no confidence, regardless of differing views on the process.
Spiritually and morally, it requires principles, approaches, and direction that must be defined by the Holy Etchmiadzin.
Only through the harmonious functioning of these two levels can we protect not just the Mother See but also the collective interests of the Armenian nation,” Abrahamyan wrote.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated on his Facebook page that “it is necessary to take effective steps to free the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin's Catholicosate and organize new Catholicos elections.” He added that “we should now create a Coordination Group to handle the organizational matters of this agenda,” noting that he will personally take responsibility for selecting the first 10 members of this group.
