India has begun relocating its nationals from high-risk areas of Iran due to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, and is actively considering Armenia as one of the evacuation routes. This was reported by The Indian Express.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Indian citizens, including students, are being moved to safer locations under the supervision of the Indian Embassy in Tehran, according to Armenpress.
“The government is also evaluating evacuation options, and discussions are underway regarding the use of Armenia as a safe transit route,” the report stated.
The Indian Express also noted that Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has spoken with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan to coordinate logistics and diplomatic arrangements.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has advised Indian citizens and those of Indian origin to stay indoors, avoid non-essential movement, and follow updates from official channels.
As of 2022, around 10,000 Indian nationals, including approximately 2,000 students, reside in Iran.
Iran has temporarily closed its airspace amid the ongoing exchange of strikes with Israel, raising safety concerns for foreign nationals.
The reciprocal strikes between Israel and Iran have continued for five consecutive days. Iranian authorities report 224 deaths from Israeli attacks, most of them civilians. Israel has reported 24 casualties from Iranian retaliatory strikes.
