Khandanyan says Azerbaijani aggression unjustified

Azerbaijan has no valid reason or legitimacy to launch aggression against Armenia, according to Sargis Khndanyan, a member of the "Civil Contract" party and head of the Armenian parliament’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations. When asked whether tensions between Iran and Israel could also pose a threat to Armenia, he noted that any regional escalation, especially involving Armenia's neighbors, raises security concerns. However, he emphasized: “I continue to insist that Azerbaijan has neither cause nor legitimacy to initiate such action,” as reported by Armenpress.

Khandanyan also reiterated that Armenia remains fully prepared to sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan at any time. “Armenia is actively working toward this goal, and negotiations and discussions are ongoing to bring the signing of the peace treaty as close as possible,” he said.

Regarding the likelihood of military conflict at this stage, Khandanyan responded, “I cannot offer such an assessment, but I repeat once again—there is no pretext, reason, or legitimacy for aggression.”

On March 13, the Armenian Foreign Ministry announced that it had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals on two previously disputed articles of the draft agreement, declaring the peace deal ready for signing. Yerevan said it is ready to begin consultations on the time and place of signing. Baku, however, has introduced new preconditions and stated it is too early to discuss dates for the meeting.
