Rosatom sends 1500 tons of new equipment to Armenian NPP

Rosatom Service, a subsidiary of Russia’s state corporation Rosatom, has provided 1,500 tons of new equipment to the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) under the second phase of its modernization program, scheduled to run through 2026.

According to Sputnik Armenia, the upgrade and life-extension projects for the ANPP’s operating Unit 2 are among the most critical initiatives in Armenia-Russia energy cooperation.

With participation from relevant Russian organizations and research institutes, Rosatom Service delivered this equipment to the plant’s turbine hall, supported upgrades to safety and automated control systems, and carried out reactor vessel processing—making the operational extension possible.

The modernization has not only extended the reactor’s operational lifespan but also increased its output from 380–390 MW to 440 MW.

In 2023, Rosatom Service and the Armenian NPP signed an agreement to extend the plant’s operation until 2036. Work is already underway for a second life-extension phase. The Armenian NPP currently supplies about one-third of the country’s electricity. Armenian authorities plan to build a new unit by 2036 to replace the current reactor.
