Daughter of arrested businessman defends his legacy

Tatev Karapetyan, daughter of detained businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan, spoke on Instagram about her father's years of charitable work.

She described him as someone who never sought recognition for his actions, simply fulfilling his duty. As reported by Panorama.am , Karapetyan built the Stepanakert hospital with his own resources, which has treated over 50,000 patients—including more than 7,000 injured—between 2014 and September 28, 2023.

“What is the value of one life? What about thousands?” she wrote. “Few can save even one, let alone thousands. And few can rightly be proud of it. He never sought praise, never boasted. He simply served his people—quietly, consistently, and selflessly.”

Tatev emphasized that this hospital is just one example of his impact, saying, “That’s why today, we must speak out. Samvel Karapetyan is the greatest benefactor in the history of modern Armenia and Artsakh. And truly, a great patriot. And one more thing—he is my father. And I am endlessly proud to be his daughter.”

On the night of June 18, Karapetyan left his Yerevan residence with law enforcement. Later, it became known that he was being questioned by the Investigative Committee and was then detained for two months for allegedly making a public call to seize government authority.

Just hours earlier, Karapetyan had voiced support for the Armenian Apostolic Church: “I stand with our church and our people. No matter how much they try to discredit us—neither the electric networks nor their authority matter to me. Everything will be fine. The people will speak, and they will realize their mistake.”

In response, Prime Minister Pashinyan wrote, “Why have the immoral 'clergy' and their immoral 'benefactors' become active again? No worries—we will silence them again. This time, permanently.” He later added that the Electric Networks of Armenia must be nationalized swiftly.
