Court to review arrest bid for Archbishop Bagrat

Armenia’s law enforcement has arrested Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, leader of the “Holy Struggle” movement. A request for his pre-trial detention is expected to be filed with the court, according to his lawyer Sergey Harutyunyan, Aysor.am reports.

The archbishop has declined to testify and does not accept the charges against him. “I believe they will file for detention, as the wording of the documents and the Investigative Committee’s statement clearly indicate that direction,” Harutyunyan said, as cited by Radar.am .

On the morning of June 25, authorities began searches at the residences of “Holy Struggle” supporters. The Investigative Committee claims that movement members and leaders “planned terrorist acts and actions aimed at seizing power in the Republic of Armenia.”

On June 24, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan shared an article from civic.am titled “The opposition's coup plan” on his Facebook page, commenting: “This process will go down in history as the failed coup of traitors.”
