Dangerous plot against Armenia prevented, says Pashinyan

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced during a Cabinet meeting that Armenian law enforcement agencies have uncovered and foiled a serious crime aimed at undermining the country’s statehood, national security, and stability.

He praised the coordinated efforts of the National Security Service (NSS), Investigative Committee, Police, Prosecutor’s Office, and Ministry of Internal Affairs. Pashinyan stated he would propose state honors for the most outstanding officers, according to Armenpress.

“It is important to note that a crime was being prepared against our statehood, Armenia’s security and stability. Naturally, its execution was also prevented. I thank all members of our law enforcement,” he said.

Pashinyan also shared that he had discussed the matter earlier in the day with the President of Armenia.

Responding to public reactions, Pashinyan acknowledged that many users on social media have compared the incident to the October 27, 1999 terrorist attack. “Some users say a new October 27 was prevented in Armenia. Others raise the question: could the 1999 attack have been stopped by the law enforcement of that time? I believe this is a question that also deserves a credible answer. I hope our law enforcement will make efforts to find it,” he added.

Bagrat Galstanyan was arrested for two months and charged under three articles of Armenia’s Criminal Code: terrorism, organizing mass unrest, and attempting to usurp power.

The Investigative Committee submitted motions for the pre-trial detention of 16 individuals. Nine were approved; one decision is due June 26, and the remaining motions will also be reviewed that day.

On the morning of June 25, law enforcement began searches at the homes of “Srabazan Pyuqar” supporters. The Investigative Committee claims the group planned terrorist acts and an illegal power grab. Movement leader Archbishop Bagrat was detained for two months.

On June 24, Prime Minister Pashinyan shared a civic.am article titled “The opposition’s coup plan,” writing: “This process will go down in history as the failed coup of traitors.”
