Armenia, EU begin talks on defense cooperation

Following his meeting with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas in Yerevan, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan announced that Armenia and the EU have initiated consultations on defense and security cooperation.

“This is a crucial step in adapting bilateral cooperation to contemporary challenges and enhancing our joint efforts to address them,” said Mirzoyan, according to Sputnik Armenia.

The talks also covered the work of the EU monitoring mission in Armenia and the support provided under the European Peace Facility framework.

Mirzoyan further noted that Armenia and the EU have successfully concluded negotiations on a new partnership agenda, reports 1lurer.am .

“This is an ambitious document that will introduce new areas of cooperation and deepen the existing Armenia-EU bilateral agenda, while also promoting the effective implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement between Armenia and the EU,” he said.

He emphasized Armenia’s efforts to bolster resilience, including the development of democratic institutions and measures to counter hybrid threats and disinformation.

“The signing of an agreement on Armenia’s involvement in EU crisis management operations reflects the mutual readiness to expand the Armenia-EU partnership agenda and underscores Armenia’s commitment to contributing constructively to global security, stability, and peace,” Mirzoyan added.

Concluding his remarks, Mirzoyan stated: “Today we can confidently say that Armenia-EU relations have never been this comprehensive and close.”

He also expressed gratitude to the EU for its support to Armenia in recent years.

In July 2024, the EU allocated €10 million from the European Peace Facility to enhance Armenia’s defense logistics capabilities. A further €20 million was planned for 2025, but Hungary blocked the disbursement, insisting similar funding be granted to Azerbaijan. Discussions on the matter are ongoing.
