Yerevan, Ottawa eye closer economic, democratic cooperation

President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan received Canadian Ambassador to Armenia Andrew Turner and congratulated him on Canada’s national day.

“Our bilateral relations have developed impressively in recent years. I thank the Canadian government for its support to Armenia—particularly regarding our independence, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. These are fundamental elements for any nation's identity and security, giving people confidence to think about the future,” the president noted.

Khachaturyan also highlighted Canada’s backing during difficult times, particularly its contribution to the EU’s monitoring mission, which both parties agreed plays a vital role in stabilizing regional peace and security.

Ambassador Turner thanked the president for the warm reception and kind wishes.

“I’m pleased to have this meeting. It’s always a good moment to celebrate Armenian-Canadian friendship. This is the second time we are marking Canada Day together since the embassy opened. I agree with you—we’ve seen impressive progress in our relations over the past year,” he said.

Turner reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting Armenia’s efforts toward regional peace and democratic development. He underlined Canada’s readiness to continue backing democratic reforms in Armenia.

During the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of cooperation in mutually beneficial fields. They highlighted the need for sustained engagement in trade and innovation, particularly in advancing ties in high-tech sectors.

The conversation also addressed parliamentary diplomacy as a tool for political culture development, with a focus on utilizing Canada’s democratic experience to strengthen Armenian institutions.

They also discussed expanding cultural cooperation, particularly within the Francophonie framework, viewing it as a promising avenue for closer ties.
