Prosecutor seeks charges against MP Ohanyan in his absence

Armenia’s Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan has submitted a motion to the National Assembly seeking consent to initiate criminal proceedings against MP Seyran Ohanyan, who was not present during the session.

In a public statement, Ohanyan criticized the move as unlawful, asserting that it violated the Constitutional Law on the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly. He accused the ruling bloc of staging a political show despite knowing about his temporary medical incapacity.

Quoting Article 108, Clause 3 of the Rules of Procedure, Ohanyan noted that “if the MP named in the motion is absent from the session without valid reason, the issue is to be discussed without their participation.” He contended that the authorities, fully aware of his medical condition, proceeded with the process in violation of this clause.

On July 1, Ohanyan sent a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, informing him that he could not attend the emergency session as he had been undergoing rehabilitation treatment since June 27. The letter included a medical certificate.

Ohanyan accused the ruling bloc of orchestrating the session for two main purposes: to divert public attention from critical threats facing the country, and to continue, in coordination with Azerbaijani authorities, the systematic neutralization of political, public, military, philanthropic, and religious figures who defend Artsakh, Armenia, and the spiritual values of the Armenian people.
