Rubio says U.S. expects Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal soon

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope that a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be signed soon. He made the statement during a meeting held at the White House, though provided no further details.

According to Rubio, one of the foreign policy successes of Donald Trump’s presidency could be the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace accord, reports Vesti.ru.

“We hope there will soon be a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The entire Middle East and its infrastructure could now shift due to Syria and Lebanon. And it hasn't even been six months yet,” Rubio said, addressing Trump.

On March 13, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry announced it had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals on the two previously unresolved articles and that the peace agreement was ready for signing. Armenia also expressed readiness to begin consultations on the timing and venue for the signing. However, Baku introduced new preconditions and stated that it was too early to talk about a meeting date.

The draft agreement includes 17 points, of which 15 had already been agreed upon. The remaining two concern mutual renunciation of international-level claims and the non-deployment of third-country representatives along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.
