Ruling party MP: we face terrorists, not politicians

Hayk Konjoryan, leader of the Civil Contract faction in Armenia’s National Assembly, responded to ongoing tensions in parliament through a Facebook post, claiming that “terrorists who were ousted without violence now want to return through violence to commit new acts of violence.”

“We ask for your understanding—those in front of us are not politicians but criminal terrorists,” Konjoryan wrote.

He stated that those responsible “must be held accountable” and apologized “that the process is a bit noisy.”

According to Konjoryan, “if anyone thinks that the terrorists’ bullets were only meant for officials, they are mistaken.” He warned that their plan was “to seize power, surrender sovereignty, provoke new wars, and bring back corruption with renewed vigor.”

“They would’ve gunned down hopes, impoverished families, and forced the rising middle class into exile. Those who never stood up would’ve lost all hope. That’s what would’ve happened if the planned terrorism had succeeded. But it didn’t—it was prevented thanks to our law enforcement agencies,” he added.

Konjoryan concluded by saying, “Better for nerves to be shaken by state action than by bullets. And better to live in a noisy democracy than in a silent dictatorship.”

The post follows unrest during the parliamentary debate over stripping opposition MP Artur Sargsyan of immunity. After his speech, tensions escalated, security personnel entered the chamber, and police later attempted to detain Levon Kocharyan’s aide, Artur Sukoyan. Deputy Speaker Hakob Arshakyan accused the opposition of provoking the incident and called for calm.
