MP warns of political purges linked to future concessions

Anna Grigoryan, a member of the opposition Hayastan faction, stated that current developments in Armenia are different elements of a single ongoing process. She made the remarks outside the Avan branch of the General Jurisdiction Criminal Court, where a hearing was held on the pre-trial detention request for Hayastan MP Artur Sargsyan.

"Looking at the attacks against the Church, a major benefactor, and the Hayastan faction, we should ask why this is happening. I can name two reasons. First, the 2026 elections—there is a clear effort to exclude key political figures from the process. But my main theory is that significant concessions are expected soon from the ruling authorities, and they need to isolate anyone who could influence resistance to these decisions," she told Aysor.am .

She also said that at this stage, expecting any impartial court ruling is pointless.

"Given that this judge also ruled in the Samvel Karapetyan case, it's obvious none of us have any expectations for a favorable outcome," Grigoryan said.

On the morning of June 25, law enforcement authorities began searches at the homes of supporters of the Sacred Struggle movement. The Investigative Committee stated that the movement’s members and leaders had allegedly planned terrorist acts and actions aimed at seizing power in Armenia. Later it was reported that the movement’s leader, Archbishop Bagrat, was detained for two months. Fourteen other individuals were also arrested.
