AZERIS RESIDING IN GEORGIA AFRAID OF ETHNIC ARMENIANS' COMING TO POWER IN COUNTRY
The situation in the Georgia's regions populated by Azeris has become tense because of the coming elections to the bodies of the local self-government. Baku press has produced hysteria by claims that "the official Tbilisi conducts the policy of ethnic purge towards Azerbaijanis". The meeting of the leaders of the community, at which the current situation that is due to "complication of the attitude" towards the Azeris residing in the country, took place in Tbilisi the other day. The participants of the meeting adopted the declaration stating that a number of political and state figures of Georgia have recently spoken with offensive statements concerning Azeri people. "Such an attitude to the Azeris residing in the country might have an unexpected consequences for Georgia", the document states. The leaders of the community are indignant, particularly, at that the chair of the parliamentary commission on defense Georgi Baramidze and "National movement" opposition party leader, ex-justice minister Mikhail Sahakashvili call Azeris "Tatars". Azeris dislike Mikhail Sahakashvili especially as his Armenian origin worries them since it is known that this politician confidently pretends to the presidential post. It should be reminded, some time ago, the person for Azeris' accusations was another ethnic Armenian, ex-speaker of the parliament Zurab Ghvania, who has quite enough chances to become the successor to Eduard Shevardnadze.
