CEC chief points to June 7 as likely election date

Armenia’s parliamentary elections are expected to take place on June 7, pending a presidential decree, according to the head of the Central Election Commission.

Central Election Commission chairman Vahagn Hovakimyan told journalists that, under constitutional provisions, parliamentary elections must be held between June 2 and June 12, while the exact date is set by the president.

“You know that the presidential decree has not yet been issued, but everyone is effectively moving forward with a clear election date, and that date is June 7. Why is that? Within the period I mentioned, the only Sunday is June 7. If the president were to designate a non-working day, it would trigger the need for so-called chain regulations,” Hovakimyan said, Panorama.am reports.

He added that during these elections, the CEC will apply a number of monitoring and oversight tools to ensure more proper and modern control of campaign financing.

“In cooperation with international partners, the CEC will implement monitoring programs that will allow us to subject online campaigning to more evidence-based and as comprehensive monitoring as possible,” Hovakimyan said.

During the same meeting with journalists, he also noted that capital renovation of the CEC’s administrative building will begin in 2027, commenting on the buzzing noise coming from a screen installed in the press hall.

According to him, the screen cannot be replaced in the near future, but renovation costs are planned in the 2027–2028 budgets.

“I hope that by then the press hall will be equipped with modern technology,” he said.
