Turkey accelerates work to reopen Alican checkpoint

Preparations to reopen the Alican border crossing (known as Margara on the Armenian side) have intensified, according to Turkish newspaper Yeşil Iğdır, cited by Radar Armenia. The crossing is viewed as a key component in the normalization of Armenia–Turkey relations.

Governor of Iğdır Province, M. Fırat Taşolar, recently conducted a site inspection, reviewing the status of renovation and modernization efforts and receiving updates on the progress.

The report says that preparatory work is nearing completion.

During the visit, Governor Taşolar examined infrastructure at the crossing point, including facilities and access roads, and emphasized that the project is expected to be completed in the near future.

The Turkish source noted that the reopening of the crossing could have a notable impact on the regional economy.

According to the article, the reopening aims to:

  • Restart cross-border trade, spurring economic activity in Iğdır and nearby regions
  • Offer logistical benefits, by shortening transport routes across the Caucasus
  • Boost tourism, increasing bilateral travel and promoting regional tourism development

The Alican–Margara crossing has been closed to civilian traffic since 1993, but was temporarily opened last year for humanitarian aid after the earthquake in Turkey.
