UN praises Armenia's handling of displaced people

Monica Sandri, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Armenia, praised the Armenian government's high effectiveness in managing the reception and integration of forcibly displaced persons. Her remarks came during a meeting with Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Davit Khudatyan.

Khudatyan, in turn, praised the UNHCR mission in Armenia, especially for its work during the days of mass displacement from Nagorno-Karabakh. He expressed gratitude for the agency's continued support in addressing the needs of displaced individuals, both during and after the crisis.

The meeting also covered the progress of long-term programs related to refugees. Sandri assured that the UNHCR will maintain its focus on issues of integration and employment for the displaced population.

On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan launched a large-scale military offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh, subjecting the entire region to intense shelling. One day later, on September 20, the Artsakh authorities agreed to a ceasefire proposal from the Russian peacekeeping command, accepting Baku’s conditions, which included the disbanding of the Defense Army and the dissolution of the Republic of Artsakh. The assault left 223 people dead, including 20 civilians, 6 of them children. Beginning September 24, over 100,000 ethnic Armenians were forcibly displaced to Armenia. According to reports, only about 20 Armenians remained in Nagorno-Karabakh; of those, 11 later relocated to Armenia, one died, and one was detained.
