National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan shared new details about his recent meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, describing it as a thorough and direct conversation that lasted 1 hour and 40 minutes, Armenpress reports.
“Yes, I expressed our concerns, and they presented theirs. The point of my visit and our meeting was for both sides to voice what troubles them. Beyond exchanging views, we also had practical discussions and proposals, ranging from investment opportunities in Armenia to organizing Armenian Culture Days in Russia,” Simonyan stated.
He added that he was unaware the meeting would be broadcast live, including its format and media coverage.
Regarding the TRIPP initiative, Simonyan said it was mentioned briefly. “He [Lavrov] implied that things are different now. I agreed, yes, the reality has changed. And there is now an opportunity for Russia, not necessarily through TRIPP, but to be involved in building, rebuilding, and operating infrastructure projects,” Simonyan explained, adding that Russia may find this proposal interesting and a response is expected.
Simonyan emphasized that he also directly addressed recent controversial statements from Russian sources, including alleged comments about conducting a “special military operation” on Armenian territory.
“What I said here [in Armenia], I said there [in Moscow],” Simonyan confirmed.
As for Lavrov’s response, Simonyan noted that the Russian side firmly denied having any such intentions, dismissing the remarks as personal opinions of individuals.
“They assured me that they have no interest in interfering in Armenia’s domestic or foreign policy. Of course, they have their concerns, as do we. At one point, they even wished our ruling party success in the upcoming elections,” he added.
Lavrov previously commented on Armenia’s potential EU accession, saying it would contradict the country’s commitments within the EAEU, but added that Moscow would respect any decision Yerevan makes. He also acknowledged Armenia’s intent to maintain ties with Russia, though not everyone in the EU favors that.
