Narek Karapetyan, coordinator of the Mer Dzevov (Our Way) movement, responded to the recent visit of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to Armenia by stating that the interests of Armenian citizens were “put up for sale on Amazon.”
“Yesterday, the interests of Armenian citizens were sold on Amazon. We witnessed a historic visit by the U.S. Vice President. A statement was issued in which he presented his country’s interests. He also made a statement that our government's translator intentionally mistranslated,” Karapetyan said, as reported by Panorama.am .
He emphasized that the figure of $9 billion, mentioned in the statement, was framed as an investment, but according to him, it actually refers to the acquisition of a modular nuclear power plant through state debt.
Karapetyan published the original version of Vance’s statement and compared it with the translator’s wording.
“When we compare them, dear compatriots, we see what a massive lie they are trying to sell us. The purchase of $9 billion worth of equipment from the U.S. was presented as an investment. The translator intentionally mistranslated to prevent us from realizing that this is about a modular nuclear power plant to be acquired via state debt, with Armenian citizens paying for it, not the U.S. This is an addition of $9 billion to our national debt,” Karapetyan said.
He then posed a rhetorical question: “Do you know how many modular nuclear power plants the U.S. has built worldwide?”
“Zero. The first modular plant in nuclear energy is being tested in the Republic of Armenia,” he claimed.
According to Karapetyan, China had offered Armenia a nuclear plant twice as powerful and twice as cheap.
“I can state this with full responsibility, as I was one of the negotiators. Just for a photo with the U.S. Vice President, our country’s weak leader sacrificed another of Armenia’s interests, presenting a $9 billion deal to the U.S. just to get a picture and deceive the public into thinking we’re entering a new revolutionary phase with the U.S.,” he added, calling the deal a betrayal of trust.
Following his meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance announced that the two countries had completed negotiations on a Section 123 agreement in the field of civilian nuclear energy. He said this opens the door for large-scale projects, including up to $5 billion in initial exports from the U.S., plus $4 billion in fuel and service-related support.
