RPA weighs participation in June election

Armenia’s Republican Party (RPA) has not yet decided whether it will participate in the June 7 National Assembly elections. Party chairman Serzh Sargsyan said this, according to RFE/RL.

“At first glance, it seems simple — we either take part or we do not. But when we delve into the substance, there is a dilemma: should we fight for a few mandates, or create far more favorable conditions by minimizing our intra-opposition struggle and thereby try to generate success for forces that aim to win,” the third president stated.

Sargsyan also said that individuals had visited him to hold discussions regarding the parliamentary elections, but he did not disclose who they were.

Asked what lay behind the intensification of intra-opposition tensions and disagreements with the team of second president Robert Kocharyan, the RPA leader said he did not agree with that assessment, stressing that, in his words, “the waters are clearing.”

“All those who attempt — political forces — to score points at our expense, supposedly to reduce our chances, it is obvious that they will be told the truth. And if they try to attribute something to others, they will hear the truth. We have no complexes. Whatever slander there may be, they will receive a response in the form of truth,” he emphasized.

Regarding what factors would influence the Republican Party’s final decision, Sargsyan said that all internal surveys show the party in a passing position, though other considerations remain. A decision will be made only after those factors are clarified. In his view, the RPA will likely adopt a clear stance by the end of April.

He also addressed whether, following the example of Gyumri, opposition forces could unite in parliament.

“I cannot say that today. When the time comes, when I am convinced, I will certainly announce it before the elections. It is not about uniting; it is about softening intra-opposition struggle,” Sargsyan said.

Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had stated that as a result of the elections all former authorities would be “finally and irreversibly pushed out of the political arena.”

At the same time, opposition forces that have announced their intention to participate in the 2026 parliamentary elections expressed confidence that Pashinyan’s government has only days left in power and will leave after June 7.
