Afghan migrants attempt illegal crossing from Iran

Two groups of Afghan citizens attempted to enter Armenia from Iran by crossing the Araks River, Armenia’s Investigative Committee said, according to Factor.am .

According to investigators, two criminal proceedings were launched on February 21, 2026, by the Syunik Regional Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee after two groups of citizens of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan attempted to cross the Armenian–Iranian state border illegally from Iran on February 20.

The cases were opened under Article 469, Part 3, Clause 2 of Armenia’s Criminal Code — illegal crossing of the state border by a group of persons by prior agreement.

The preliminary investigation is ongoing at the Main Department for Investigation of Crimes Against the State, Constitutional Order and Public Security of the Investigative Committee.

When asked whether this was the only such incident in recent days, the committee did not provide further details.

On the morning of February 28, Israel and the United States began strikes on Tehran and other parts of Iran. On the first day of the attacks, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other high-ranking officials were killed. In response, Iran has launched strikes on Israel and U.S. military bases in the Middle East. A state of emergency has been declared in Israel.
