Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has denied Tehran’s involvement in the drone incident near Nakhichevan International Airport.
“Iran does not carry out strikes against neighboring countries. This incident requires a thorough investigation,” the official said, according to 1lurer.am .
He added that Iran’s strikes could target only those states that allow the deployment of military bases of Iran’s adversaries on their territory.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said the country’s armed forces had been given appropriate instructions following reports of Iranian drone strikes, APA reported.
Aliyev made the statement during a Security Council meeting held on March 5.
“We will not tolerate this unfounded terrorist act and aggression against Azerbaijan,” he said.
Aliyev added that he had instructed the Azerbaijani armed forces to prepare and implement response measures.
He also said Iranian officials must explain the incident and issue an apology, adding that Azerbaijan has not participated and will not participate in actions against Iran.
Air traffic in Nakhichevan has been suspended, both on domestic and international routes.
