Macron reaffirms support for Armenia-Azerbaijan peace talks

French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s support for the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan following a phone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Macron shared details of the call in a post on X, according to Armenpress.

The French leader expressed support for President Ilham Aliyev after Iran’s strike on Nakhichevan and thanked Azerbaijan for assisting in the evacuation of French citizens.

“Within the framework of my consultations with regional leaders, I spoke with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, to whom I conveyed our support and solidarity with his country after Iran’s strikes.

I also thank Azerbaijan for the assistance provided in evacuating our citizens. I used this opportunity to reaffirm our support for the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan and our desire to continue bilateral dialogue with Baku on a stronger footing,” Macron wrote.

On February 28, Israel and the U.S. carried out airstrikes on Iran, killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran responded by launching strikes toward Israel and Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases.

Iran also targeted Nakhchivan airport with drones. Several other unmanned aerial vehicles fell in other areas. Later it was reported that one of the drones crashed near a school. Iran’s ambassador in Baku, Mojtaba Demirchilou, was summoned to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry and handed a note of protest.
