Representatives of the Wings of Unity political initiative delivered data to Armenia’s Ministry of Defense regarding an alleged new Azerbaijani military position in Gegharkunik, demanding explanations.
Narek Paronyan, a representative of the initiative, said their visit was prompted by what they describe as repeated Azerbaijani incursions and territorial seizures.
“A few days ago, Arman Tatoyan showed with evidence how Azerbaijani armed forces advanced and fortified positions inside Armenia’s sovereign territory in August 2025. A stir began within the ruling circles. From the parliamentary podium, the defense minister simply said it was ‘false’. No counterarguments were presented, no data published—only accusations,” he said, according to Panorama.am .
Paronyan added that they intend to demand clarification from the minister as to why authorities did not inform the public about what they describe as Azerbaijan’s incursion into Armenian territory.
He also said that in July 2025 there were positional advances in the Vardenis region, after which the Sotk mine came fully under Azerbaijani observation. According to him, Azerbaijani forces also control Kut village and several roads in the Vardenis area.
In his assessment, Azerbaijani forces built positions on Armenia’s sovereign territory, carried out fortification works, dug trenches and now monitor the entire area from those positions.
Paronyan said the authorities’ claims that Armenia suffered no territorial losses in 2025 are contradicted by the evidence they presented, adding that losses occurred both in Vardenis and Jermuk.
He argued that the documents indicate that Azerbaijan is gradually advancing into Armenian territory step by step.
“Suren Papikyan cannot produce any evidence to refute this. With the same enthusiasm he once ate pastries on a bus with Nikol Pashinyan, let him try to refute it with facts,” Paronyan said.
He then handed a representative of the Defense Ministry satellite images and coordinates related to the alleged Azerbaijani incursion.
Former head of the State Revenue Committee Davit Ananyan, also a member of the initiative, wrote on Facebook that investigations conducted by independent journalists effectively confirm the information presented during Tatoyan’s press conference.
He argued that the issue is no longer about Tatoyan personally but about how state officials treat the truth, adding that if a defense minister calls reality a lie from the parliamentary podium, he should apologize to the public and, in a rule-of-law state, resign.
Earlier, Arman Tatoyan said on Facebook that before the pre-signing of a peace agreement, Azerbaijan had urgently built new positions in occupied Armenian territories to be able to take concrete actions if necessary.
According to an analysis of updated satellite images from Planet Labs, there was no position at the site on August 1, but earthworks began on August 2, and by August 9 the position had reached its final form, Factor.am reported.
On March 4, Tatoyan held an urgent press conference stating that a new Azerbaijani position had appeared in Armenia’s sovereign territory in the direction of Kut village in Gegharkunik. The position, he said, was installed after July 31, ahead of a meeting held in Washington on August 8.
On the same day, during a government Q&A session, Defense Minister Suren Papikyan called Tatoyan’s claims “false,” saying the former official was lying and that no such situation existed.
