Iran asks Russia for humanitarian aid

Iran has asked Russia for humanitarian assistance, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said during a briefing.

“Due to the destruction of numerous hospitals and ambulance stations, as well as the large number of wounded, including women and children, the Iranian side has asked friendly states, including Russia, to supply medicines,” she said, according to RIA Novosti.

Zakharova added that, on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the delivery of humanitarian aid has already been organized.

Earlier, it was reported that an Il-76 transport aircraft of Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry delivered more than 13 tons of humanitarian aid to Azerbaijan, which is intended for Iran.

Military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran have now entered their second week, with the sides continuing to exchange strikes.

Authorities in Tel Aviv say their goal is to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while Washington has threatened to destroy Iran’s military potential and has called on Iranian citizens to overthrow the current government.

Iran, in turn, has said it is ready to defend itself and currently sees no reason to resume negotiations.

Amid the escalating conflict, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s key routes for oil and liquefied natural gas exports from the Persian Gulf—has nearly halted.

On February 28, Israel and the United States launched airstrikes against Iran, killing the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran responded with strikes against Israel and against U.S. military facilities in Persian Gulf countries.
