Robert Kocharyan, Armenia’s second president, has been nominated as the prime ministerial candidate of the Armenia Alliance. The announcement was made during a gathering of the bloc held at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex.
In his speech, Kocharyan stated that security will remain one of Armenia’s key challenges in the coming years. He emphasized that the alliance supports peace with Azerbaijan, but only if it is backed by clear guarantees, Panorama.am reports.
“Armenia needs a combat-ready army, strong leadership and powerful allies so that all threats can be neutralized through joint efforts. Armenia’s foreign policy must be predictable, understandable and reject the option of playing on the contradictions between major powers.
Let me remind you that this very approach ensured Armenia’s most peaceful years during my presidency. Today, I declare that I can guarantee an absolutely reliable format for our security model. We support peace with Azerbaijan, but that peace must be based not on a ‘trust me’ model, but on real security guarantees. This is especially important in a world where the rule of law has increasingly been replaced by the law of force,” Kocharyan said.
He added that he will not rest until the current authorities leave power, Sputnik Armenia reports.
“We are determined, and our goal is victory. I am confident that the evil embodied by this government will be defeated. I entered the struggle against them from the first day they came to power and will not rest until they are removed,” he stressed.
Ishkhan Saghatelyan, representative of the Supreme Body of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) in Armenia and a member of parliament from the Armenia faction, announced that they will participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections in a unified format through the Armenia Alliance, which has also been joined by the “Araj” party.
The alliance will take part in the elections under the slogan “Together we can.”
Saghatelyan also said he is directly addressing the opposition field, noting that they have no targets there but rather partners for today’s and tomorrow’s struggle.
“Our only target is the current authorities, and we expect the same approach from our colleagues in the opposition,” he said.
He added that they are offering the Armenian people an alternative based on three cornerstones:
“A nationwide test awaits us — either us or them. We choose Armenia,” Saghatelyan concluded.
Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled to take place on June 7, 2026.
Participation has already been announced by Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan; former Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan with his newly created initiative Wings of Unity; former Yerevan mayor Hayk Marutyan with the New Force party; as well as the Armenian National Congress (ANC), whose prime ministerial candidate is Levon Zurabyan, and the Republic Party led by Aram Sargsyan. Samvel Karapetyan’s Strong Armenia party, Gagik Tsarukyan — who has attempted to present his “Proposal to Armenia” program as a kind of “Noah’s Ark” for opposition forces — and the Armenian Vote party have also officially announced their participation in the elections.
