Armenia hosts security talks before COP17 summit

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are in Armenia to take part in security planning processes ahead of the COP17 conference.

As part of the needs assessment, the group will also visit the main venues where the conference will be held.

Armenia is preparing to host the 17th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) from October 18 to 30. Within this framework, priority attention is being given to all components of security, with responsible officials and coordinators already appointed.

“The event is unprecedented for the Republic of Armenia in terms of its scale and significance. The coordinator for nuclear safety during the event is the Director of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs,” said Deputy Director of the Rescue Service Artur Vardanyan.

Leaders of various countries, senior officials, and representatives of international organizations are expected to attend, requiring proper planning and a high level of preparedness.

“The Rescue Service has sent invitations to international experts to visit Armenia, conduct capacity assessments, share experience, and evaluate the availability of necessary technical resources,” the deputy director added.

The workshop agenda includes planning and preparation of nuclear security measures, as well as risk assessment. Participants were introduced to the specifics of using technical tools and mechanisms for effective deployment of human resources, while experts shared experience from securing major events held in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and France.

Through such meetings and cooperation with international partners, Armenia continues to strengthen its capabilities to ensure the safe and effective organization of the COP17 conference.
