Minasyan remains in custody after prosecutor decision

The prosecutor has refused to use discretionary powers to change the preventive measure for 18-year-old David Minasyan, who was detained after an incident at St. Anna Church, his lawyer Lusine Martirosyan said, according to Sputnik Armenia.

According to the lawyer, the decision was expected. She added that a special review day has been scheduled at the Court of Appeal, and they are awaiting a ruling.

Martirosyan said that all video evidence related to Minasyan’s injuries has been submitted to the investigative body with a request to examine it.

Speaking about his health condition, she noted that she had visited him in the morning, but no significant changes had been recorded.

“Treatment is ongoing, IVs are connected. The lights are turned off; he cannot look at light at all due to an eye injury. The blow was very strong. In the video, he stands up after the blow but cannot maintain balance and tries to adjust his jaw,” the lawyer said, adding that Minasyan also has other serious diagnoses.

On April 9, a group of citizens gathered outside the Prosecutor’s Office demanding that Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan release Minasyan or at least change his preventive measure, but she did not meet with them. Earlier, his friends had submitted a request addressed to her. Following the March 29 incident at St. Anna Church, David and his twin brother Mikael Minasyan, along with public figure Gevorg Gevorgyan, were detained on suspicion of hooliganism and interfering with an official’s duties. David Minasyan was later placed in pre-trial detention for two months and subsequently transferred for medical treatment after his condition deteriorated.
