Armenia will likely hold a referendum related to the Constitution, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said during the Yerevan Dialogue international forum.
“There is no demand or condition regarding Armenia’s Constitution within the negotiation process with Azerbaijan. The constitutional topic is not on the bilateral agenda,” he stated, according to Panorama.am .
Mirzoyan noted, however, that Azerbaijani officials continue making statements that they are not prepared to sign and ratify the peace agreement already initialed unless Armenia changes its Constitution.
“I believe Armenia’s Constitution is an internal matter concerning Armenia. We will probably have a referendum related to the Constitution, but this is not an issue to be discussed with international partners — it is our domestic matter,” the minister said.
Baku has demanded constitutional changes and the removal of references to Armenia’s Declaration of Independence. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan previously stated that his political force supports excluding references to the declaration from the text of a new Constitution.
Pashinyan also said that if a new Constitution is not approved through a referendum, another referendum would be held.
