The issue of Armenia leaving the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) cannot be discussed unless Armenia submits such a request and expresses such a desire, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said, commenting on remarks by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk.
“We have not expressed such a desire, therefore, the issue of our withdrawal cannot be discussed,” Mirzoyan said.
Asked when Armenia might make a decision on the matter, Mirzoyan replied: “When there is a need to discuss the issue. I cannot give any timeframe; such an issue is not on our agenda today,” according to Aysor.am.
Responding to a question on whether Armenia’s EAEU membership could be frozen until the country decides on its course, Mirzoyan said such a scenario was impossible.
“That cannot happen. It is an organization guided and governed by consensus votes of the Republic of Armenia. How can such a thing happen?” the minister said.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk had stated that Armenia faces a choice between the EAEU and the European Union. He said that the issue of Armenia’s status in the EAEU would be discussed at the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council scheduled for May 29 in Astana.
