Armenia extends whitefish caviar export ban

Armenia has extended the temporary ban on the export of whitefish caviar from the country for another six months. The decision was approved during a government meeting.

“The decision is expected to improve the ecological balance of Lake Sevan, preserve biodiversity in the lake and its drainage basin ecosystems, improve the sustainable use of biological resources and maintain a stable whitefish population,” the justification attached to the decision said.

The restriction will take effect on July 6.

According to the government’s explanation, the measure is aimed at preventing possible negative consequences linked to the export of high-value whitefish caviar on international markets and ensuring the preservation and natural reproduction of the commercially valuable fish species.
