Russia suspends Jermuk water imports

Russia’s consumer protection agency, Rospotrebnadzor, has temporarily suspended imports and sales of all batches of Armenian Jermuk mineral water in the country.

The agency said the product does not comply with information indicated on the label, violating the requirements of Clause 10, Section 3 of the Eurasian Economic Union technical regulation 044/2017 “On the safety of packaged drinking water, including natural mineral water.”

It said excessive levels of hydrocarbonate ions, chlorides and sulfates were detected in the water. According to Rospotrebnadzor, “misleading information regarding the product’s medicinal properties may lead to ineffective treatment and deterioration of health.”

Rospotrebnadzor said it had sent relevant notifications to the Eurasian Economic Commission and to the authorized bodies of member states of the Eurasian Economic Union. The Association of Retail Trade Companies (AKORT) and the Association of Internet Trade Companies (AKIT) were also informed.

The agency added that the situation surrounding the circulation of Jermuk mineral water remains under its supervision.

Rospotrebnadzor also suspended sales in Russia of alcoholic products from certain Armenian producers, citing “poor quality.”

“To prevent the circulation of products that do not meet mandatory requirements, trade organizations and importers were informed about the suspension of sales and the withdrawal from circulation of low-quality alcoholic products imported from Armenia,” the statement said.

Rospotrebnadzor added that products failing to meet mandatory standards were identified from CJSC “VEDI-ALCO,” LLC “Abovyan Brandy Factory,” and LLC “Shahnazaryan Wine-Brandy House.”

Earlier, Armenia’s Food Safety Inspection Body stated that inspections had found no violations in Jermuk products. Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan also said there were no current or expected problems with exports of Armenian apricots and Jermuk mineral water to the Russian market.
