French envoy: EU is not asking Armenia to choose

The European Union is working with the Armenian government and companies operating in the country to support Armenia amid economic restrictions imposed by Russia, French Ambassador to Armenia Olivier Decottignies said during a meeting with Armenian exporters organized by the International Trade Centre.

“It is not the European Union, nor Europe’s friends, that are asking you to make a choice. We are a reliable partner. We do not threaten, we do not pressure, we help, and we want to ensure that Armenia’s economic relations with the European Union—the world’s largest economic network—continue to grow and make you more secure,” the French ambassador said, according to Armenpress.

The diplomat noted that European partners are working jointly with representatives of both the public and private sectors to help address economic challenges.

“We Europeans are working hand in hand with the Armenian government and companies operating in Armenia to help overcome the pressure that you are experiencing today,” Decottignies said, referring to the restrictions that Russia has recently imposed on imports of Armenian products.

According to him, discussions are underway on both logistical solutions and measures that could expand Armenian products’ access to European markets while improving their competitiveness and visibility across Europe.

Russia has imposed restrictions on imports of a number of Armenian products. In particular, imports of flowers, Jermuk mineral water, certain alcoholic beverages, and fish products from Armenia have been banned. Restrictions have also been introduced on fruit and vegetable exports.

On June 4, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a phone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and announced that the EU is preparing a special support package for Armenia. Under the program, Armenia is expected to receive €50 million to help mitigate the consequences of economic pressure.
