Strong Armenia will issue a statement after the recount of votes received by the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), which will determine whether the party clears the electoral threshold and enters parliament. The announcement was made during a Facebook livestream by Narek Karapetyan, a member of the party’s political council.
According to Karapetyan, the recount results will clarify whether the opposition will have sufficient tools in the National Assembly to oppose major legislative initiatives.
He stressed that the issue is important because it could affect the appointment process for the Prosecutor General and other senior officials, while also strengthening parliamentary oversight of the government.
“We are waiting for the outcome concerning Prosperous Armenia, after which we will make a statement. If the opposition, if we manage to ensure that the opposition’s voice is taken into account in the appointment of court chairpersons, that will create balance, and we will try to address the issue of political prisoners in that way. If not, and we see there will be no result, then we will issue a statement,” he said.
Karapetyan also commented on possible mechanisms for political change, saying he sees two paths: the electoral process and street protests conducted in accordance with constitutional procedures.
“As a result of street protests, the National Assembly and a majority of its deputies would still need to vote in favor of change. If eight deputies from the Civil Contract party change their position, Pashinyan loses his seat. Of course, this is difficult immediately after an election, but over the next five years in Armenia we may see significant opportunities in that regard,” he said.
On June 8, Prosperous Armenia announced its intention to request a recount and did not rule out challenging the election results. Following recounts at just four polling stations, it was reported that 120 votes had not been counted.
