Anti-Corruption chief promises more arrests

Following the conclusion of the elections, there will be new revelations, searches and arrests in cases related to alleged vote-buying, Anti-Corruption Committee Chairman Arthur Nahapetyan said in the National Assembly.

“I assure you that we will have new revelations in this regard. We already have cases uncovered by our operational units that have not yet been made public. We have not entered the open investigation stage yet, but we will do so in the near future and will carry out searches, arrests and prosecutions. Our work will not stop. Even if years pass and we receive information about election-related crimes of a corrupt nature, we will verify that information using the full range of available tools and pursue criminal prosecutions,” he said, according to 1lurer.am.

Referring to the work already completed, Nahapetyan stated that although a 100 percent detection rate had not been achieved in election-related crimes, the committee had operated effectively. In his assessment, a substantial volume of work had been carried out relative to the committee’s staffing capacity.

“At present, we have 72 investigators filling staff positions and 78 personnel serving in operational-investigative roles. The number of vacant positions is nearly 60. In other words, with this level of human resources, the Anti-Corruption Committee has essentially uncovered more than 100 cases across the country and investigated around 115 criminal proceedings, a number that will increase as we continue to make new discoveries.

Therefore, in terms of effectiveness, taking into account our human resources and technical capabilities, I assess the committee’s work as highly effective and productive,” he said.

According to the Anti-Corruption Committee chairman, once the ongoing work is summarized, a comprehensive picture of election-related crime detections will emerge. Discussions will then be held regarding the financial resources needed to strengthen the committee’s preparedness and technical capabilities. In addition, regional branches are expected to be established in local communities.

In this context, Nahapetyan recalled that after the results of the Vagharshapat elections were finalized, numerous violations were uncovered and nearly 50 individuals were charged with giving and receiving election bribes.

According to preliminary data, votes in the elections were distributed as follows: Civil Contract — 49.825 percent, Strong Armenia — 23.281 percent, Armenia Alliance — 9.934 percent, Prosperous Armenia — 3.996 percent. Updated figures indicate that the Prosperous Armenia Party has not passed the electoral threshold, which is 4 percent for parties. The party has requested recounts in several polling stations.
