The Central Election Commission will consider on June 17 at 3:00 p.m. a prosecutor’s motion seeking to strip former Armenian President and first candidate on the Hayastan alliance electoral list, Robert Kocharyan, of immunity.
The prosecutor has appealed to the CEC to obtain consent to initiate criminal prosecution against Kocharyan.
Bagrat Mikoyan, head of the office of Armenia’s second president Robert Kocharyan, stated that the application submitted to the CEC is a continuation of what he described as the “illegal actions” that took place at the airport two days earlier.
He said that two days ago, the Investigative Committee and the Anti-Corruption Committee had stated that there were no criminal proceedings, whereas today the Prosecutor’s Office, which operates under the government, had allegedly “fabricated” a case and appealed to the CEC.
“Why did they even apply to the CEC? They disregard the law anyway. They could have simply opened a case by government decision or cited Pashinyan’s hysterical speech at a rally. In reality, Pashinyan is once again making law enforcement agencies accomplices to this crime.
We have no information about any ‘new’ criminal case, and the president has not been questioned in any case.
We are prepared for developments like this and even worse ones, and we have always been prepared,” he wrote.
On June 14, it became known that Kocharyan had been informed at the airport that he was prohibited from leaving Armenia. Kocharyan’s office had earlier announced that he planned to travel abroad on a three-day visit.
