Turkish speaker hopes for lasting peace

Turkey positively assesses the ongoing negotiation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the progress achieved toward peace, Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş has said.

According to Azerbaijani media reports, he made the remarks during his speech at the 20th session of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held in Baku, Factor.am reported.

Kurtulmuş stated that Ankara expects the establishment of lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“I hope that a long-lasting and sincere peace will be established between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the region. The South Caucasus will become a region of peace, tranquility and stability,” Kurtulmuş said.

According to him, the establishment of stability and peace in the region would be important both for the countries of the South Caucasus and for broader regional cooperation.

On August 8, a trilateral meeting involving Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was held at the White House. Following the meeting, a joint declaration on the results of the Washington talks was signed.

In Washington, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov initialed the Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and the United States.
