Armen Melikbekyan rules out reelection bid

Armen Melikbekyan, president of the Football Federation of Armenia, has announced that he will not run in the upcoming election for the federation's presidency and intends to continue his work in international football. He made the remarks in an interview with football commentator Armen Garamyan.

"At this point, I am not thinking about the elections at all because there is still a great deal of work to be done before they take place. I have no intention of running," Melikbekyan said, according to Factor.am.

Regardless of who becomes the federation's next president, Melikbekyan said the most important priority is ensuring that the programs already underway continue.

Speaking about his future plans, the current Football Federation of Armenia president said he has no intention of leaving football. He noted that he currently serves as a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, vice-chair of two UEFA committees, and vice-chair of a FIFA committee.

"I have no concerns about staying occupied. I intend to continue working in football, but with a greater focus on my international responsibilities," Melikbekyan said.

Earlier this week, Football Federation of Armenia Vice President and Executive Committee member Armen Nikoghosyan resigned. He said his decision was linked to the significant achievements recorded in Armenian football in recent years.

Melikbekyan's current term as president of the Football Federation of Armenia expires at the end of December.

Melikbekyan was re-elected president of the Football Federation of Armenia on December 23, 2023. His opponent was former Armenia national team footballer Aras Ozbiliz. Twenty-three of the federation's 25 members participated in the election. For an extended period, football supporter groups FAF and the Red Eagles have called for Melikbekyan's resignation. At a press conference a year ago, Melikbekyan said he had no intention of stepping down.
