Turkey and Azerbaijan have jointly prepared and submitted an application to inscribe baklava on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the names "baklava" and "pakhlava", according to the newspaper Türkiye.
A final decision will be made during the 21st session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee, which is scheduled to take place in Xiamen, China, from November 30 to December 5, Auroranews.am reported.
The Turkish newspaper explained its country's initiative concerning the historic Armenian dessert by referring to “longstanding disputes with Greece.” It also published a legend claiming that the baklava recipe was found in “palace culinary records dating back to the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.”
