Armenia reviews green hydrogen development

A meeting chaired by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan focused on the prospects for developing green hydrogen production in Armenia.

During the fifth session of the Investment Committee, it had previously been decided to establish a working group on hydrogen to examine opportunities for developing the green hydrogen sector, including its benefits, production methods and technologies. It was noted that the purpose of the meeting was to review proposals prepared by the working group and consulting firms following their studies on green hydrogen development in Armenia.

Participants were presented with the legal framework for green hydrogen development, its potential areas of application and a long-term strategy aimed at decarbonizing the energy system, reducing emissions, meeting green taxonomy requirements and advancing other sustainability goals.

The meeting also included detailed presentations of proposed green hydrogen projects, including the results of feasibility studies on green hydrogen production and integration prepared by the consulting firms BDO Advisory and CIVITTA. Short-, medium- and long-term development scenarios for the sector were also discussed.

Participants exchanged views on the findings and proposals, presenting observations on green hydrogen production methods as part of Armenia's broader energy transition.

Pashinyan welcomed the studies prepared by the working group and the consulting companies, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with the scientific community and the application of international experience in launching a pilot green hydrogen project. He instructed officials to submit a report in the near future on progress toward implementing the pilot initiative.
