Von der Leyen offers partnership to Azerbaijan

During a joint press statement in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union is offering Azerbaijan a new framework for connectivity cooperation.

She also welcomed the proposal to build an electricity cable to Armenia, APA reported.

"We also highly appreciate your proposal to build an electricity cable to Armenia," she said.

Von der Leyen noted that Azerbaijan has successfully leveraged its strategic location alongside its growing economic, political and regional influence.

"The South Caucasus is one of the world's most important crossroads, linking Europe, the Caspian region, and Central Asia, and its strategic importance continues to grow. Azerbaijan plays a central role in this process. Few countries enjoy such an advantageous position.

For this reason, we propose establishing a connectivity partnership between the European Union and Azerbaijan. The initiative will accompany a high-level dialogue covering transport, energy, and digital connectivity," she said.

Following her visit to Azerbaijan, Ursula von der Leyen is expected to travel to Yerevan.
