Pashinyan backs regional power links

Electricity transmission lines connecting Armenia with Azerbaijan and Turkey would strengthen the country's energy security, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"In this context, opportunities for European Union support and new regional prospects have become the subject of active discussion in connection with the implementation of the Armenian government's Crossroads of Peace initiative. Alongside the inclusive unblocking of transport routes, expanding energy connectivity is also becoming a key priority. This includes building electricity transmission lines and interconnectors with neighboring countries, including Turkey and Azerbaijan, which could contribute both to energy security and to the transition to green energy," Pashinyan said, according to Sputnik Armenia.

During her visit to Baku on July 1, von der Leyen announced that the European Union would allocate €200 million to support transport connectivity projects in the South Caucasus.

Pashinyan also said that the construction of modern energy storage facilities is a strategic priority for Armenia's energy sector. According to him, such infrastructure would make it possible to efficiently manage and store electricity generated from renewable energy sources. In this context, he stressed the importance of European Union support.

The prime minister also thanked von der Leyen and the European Union for providing Armenia with €52 million in budget support.

During a joint press statement in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, von der Leyen said the European Union is offering Azerbaijan a partnership on regional connectivity. She also welcomed the proposal to build an electricity cable connecting Azerbaijan and Armenia.
