Acting on the instructions of Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan, members of the Ombudsman's Office visited the Abovyan Penitentiary on July 13 and held confidential meetings with people deprived of their liberty, including former eighth-convocation National Assembly member Aregnaz Manukyan.

During the visit, the representatives examined how the rights of detainees are being safeguarded at the facility.

Issues raised by inmates were also discussed with members of the prison administration as part of the inspection.

The Ombudsman's Office noted that the protection of human rights in places of detention remains under the Human Rights Defender's constant supervision.

It added that the concerns voiced by detainees, together with the issues documented during the visit, will be thoroughly summarized and forwarded to the relevant authorities.
