Former Armenia national team captain Henrikh Mkhitaryan has explained why he decided to extend his contract with Serie A champions Inter Milan for another year, Factor.am reports.

"I spoke with the club after the match against Bologna. I assessed the situation and felt I could continue playing for another year. Of course, that doesn't mean I will retire after next season. Right now, my focus is entirely on this season. I'll think about the future later.

Next season you can expect a better Miki than before. Although I do feel my age catching up with me, I am here, ready to help my teammates and continue improving to help the team achieve its goals," the 37-year-old midfielder told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Inter are currently holding their pre-season training camp in Germany as they prepare for the new campaign. According to Mkhitaryan, the Milan club has once again set ambitious objectives.

"Our ambitions are high. We want to win the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, the Italian Super Cup, and go as far as possible in the UEFA Champions League. These are difficult goals, but they are achievable. Cristian Chivu has already shown what he is capable of as a coach. We support him because we are a family, and together we are pursuing our objectives," Mkhitaryan said.

The all-time leading scorer of the Armenia national team has played for Inter since 2022. During that period, he has won two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies and two Italian Super Cups, while also reaching the UEFA Champions League final twice. In the 2025–26 season, the Armenian midfielder made 39 appearances, scoring four goals and providing three assists.
