Nagorno Karabakh not mentioned in Armenian-Turkish documents
Promulgation of Protocols on normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey was rather unexpected, a Russian expert said.
"It's not surprising that this event caused diverse reaction in the two countries. However, it is premature to say that it is the failure of Armenian diplomacy, which was criticized a lot during the recent months," Andrey Areshev, deputy director general of the strategic culture foundation, told PanARMENIAN.Net.
"The fact that Nagorno Karabakh is not mentioned in the documents is Armenia's achievement. Azerbaijan is by no means linked to normalization of relations between Ankara and Yerevan, which, as a matter fact, have recognized the territorial integrity of all other UN member states. This will hardly ensure progress but the Armenian diplomacy has to take a firm stand to prevent any attempt of pressure," he said.
"The sides are facing political consultations which can last longer than 6 weeks. Even if the documents are signed, their ratification doesn't seem obvious. Although gradual normalization of relations is advisable, Turkey will use open borders, commodity and information flows as "mild force" and Armenia should be prepared to resist challenges adequately," Areshev said.
