Yerevan celebrated 180th anniversary of Khachatur Abovian's ascent to Ararat Mountain
180 years ago, on September 27, 1929, Armenian writer and educator Khachatur Abovian, along with the expedition, headed by professor Friedrich Parrot conquered Ararat Mountain's peak. The 180th anniversary of the ascent was celebrated at RA National Library today.
"Ararat conquest" film presentation was held within event frameworks. The film drew on August 30, 2009 conquering of Ararat peak by the performer of Armenian national songs Gurgen Dabaghyan and his companions. "We dedicate our assent to the great Armenian writer Khachatur Abovian," Gurgen Dabaghyan said.
Khachatur Abovian, born October 15, 1809 in the village of Kanaker, was an Armenian writer and national public figure of the early 19th century who mysteriously vanished in 1848 and was presumed dead. He was an educator, poet and an advocate of modernization. Considered as the father of modern Armenian literature, he is best remembered for his novel Verk Hayastani (Wounds of Armenia), which set the trend in both style and genre for subsequent literature. Written in 1841 and published posthumously in 1858 it was the first novel published in the modern Armenian language utilizing the Eastern Armenian dialect instead of Classical Armenian.
