Alexander Lukyanov: parties to Karabakh conflict still have chance to gain success

Researcher of the Geography Department of Moscow State University, specialist of political geography Alexander Lukyanov said that negotiations are a necessity and currently the parties still have a certain chance to gain success.

“First, the situation around the conflict suggests it. The necessity of at least attempts to solve the conflict is of great importance. Second, I believe that a certain real progress is possible in the conflict resolution today. I link its presence to the relations between Ankara and Yerevan, which should reach a new level in the near future. Though the process of diplomatic relations establishment has been bogged down, I strongly believe that it has no alternative. This process is within the interests of both Yerevan and Ankara,” said Lukyanov.

He did not exclude the possibility of rapid worsening of the situation around Iran and further force action against Iran by the West and Israel. “In this context, the Karabakh problem will become more acute. The matter is that in such case Azerbaijan’s support will be of greater importance and more valuable for the West, than that of Armenia. Under such conditions, Baku may insist on primary resolution of its conflict and then only speak about its involvement in the Iranian problem,” Day.Az quoted Lukyanov as saying.
