Le Monde: EU doesn’t want to sever relations with Ankara, yet doesn’t want to yield to its demands

Talks on Turkey’s full membership of the European Union have hit a deadlock, a French newspaper says.

According to Le Monde, the EU’s main goal is to convince Turkey to agree to privileged partnership. “The Union doesn’t want to sever relations with Ankara. It wants to make use of Turkey’s influence in Iran, Northern Africa and Balkans, but at the same time, doesn’t want to yield to its demands,” the article says.

The newspaper also notes that Turkey’s membership is supported by the U.S.
