Russian base deployment extension important from perspective of Armenia’s security

Secretary of Prosperous Armenia parliamentary group Aram Safaryan said that ratification of the protocol on amendments to the bilateral agreement on Russian military base deployment in Gyumri was the most important event during the past four-day sitting of the Armenian parliament.

“The protocol is important from the perspective of Armenia’s security and can strengthen our positions in the regional policy. That is why we voted for its ratification,” Safaryan told a briefing in the Armenian parliament.

The Armenian National Assembly ratified the Armenian-Russian protocol on the Russian military base deployment extension in Gyumri.

Protocol #5 on introduction of amendments to the March 16, 1995, Agreement between the Russian Federation and Republic of Armenia on the Russian military base on the territory of the Republic of Armenia was signed on August 20, 2010, in Yerevan, during Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s visit to Armenia.

The 1995 agreement term was set at 25 years, while the new document extends it for 49 years.
